Organizing Director

Based in Los Angeles, CA
 

Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional theater actors and stage managers in the United States, is hiring an Organizing Director in its Los Angeles office. Actors’ Equity is a national union affiliated with the AFL-CIO, with 51,000 members – and growing.  The AEA Organizing Director is a senior management position responsible for supervising a team of organizers and leading the Association’s internal and external organizing programs.  The Organizing Director position is based in the Los Angeles office of Equity and reports to the Western Regional Director/Assistant Executive Director. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a high-performing department, including hiring, supervision and training of organizing staff in multiple locations
  • Develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive external organizing program to achieve additional work opportunities for Equity members
  • Develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive internal organizing program to achieve leadership development goals and increase the positive engagement of Equity members in their union
  • Establish annual goals and accountability systems, in coordination with senior staff in all regions
  • Utilize data management tools to track progress toward organizing goals
  • Lead high-profile internal and external organizing campaigns
  • Identify and assess organizing opportunities, focusing the Association’s resources on strategic targets and campaigns
  • Design strategies and structures to engage members and build leadership identification, recruitment and development in negotiations, representation and other union activities
  • Coordinate effectively with member leadership bodies, including staffing the National Organizing Committee and reporting to elected leadership as requested
  • Work effectively as part of senior leadership team, including integration with research, communications, IT and additional departments

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills, including exceptional listening skills and the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively to groups
  • Proven ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Knowledge of private-sector labor law
  • Mastery of database management tools and assessment systems
  • Collaborative problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work successfully with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Negotiating skills
  • Industry knowledge
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and to travel on a regular basis 
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance
  • Must be available and willing to travel to such locations and with such frequency as AEA determines is necessary or desirable to meet its organizational needs.  Work in the evening and/or on a weekend may be necessary.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience strongly preferred
  • At least five years’ organizing experience, on both internal and external campaigns, including campaign lead responsibilities
  • At least three years’ supervisory experience
  • Prior experience in a labor organization or in the performing arts strongly preferred
