Government Relations Director

Pennsylvania
 

Goals and Responsibilities: Represent AFT Pennsylvania in the Legislative and Executive Branches of state government, including Pennsylvania General Assembly, caucus and committee meetings, State Board of Education, Pennsylvania Department of Education and PDE committees, and Higher Education Advisory Council.

  • Compose communications to members of the General Assembly, members of the state Board of Education, PDE staff, and the Governor's office to express AFTPA positions on issues.
  • Communicate directly with elected officials regarding AFTPA positions on pending legislative and regulatory issues.
  • Communicate with General Assembly staff regarding AFTPA positions on pending legislation.
  • Communicate with Governor's staff regarding AFTPA positions on pending legislative/regulatory issues.

AFL-CIO and Other labor and coalition partners:

  • Work closely with other union lobbyists to support/defeat legislation.

State Federation and Locals:

  • Make recommendations regarding AFTPA positioning on legislative and executive branch issues.
  • Develop and recommend strategies for AFTPA governmental relations program.
  • Communicate regularly with AFTPA president regarding legislative and executive branch issues.
  • Write timely communications for local leaders and AFTPA Executive Council regarding legislative and executive branch issues.
  • Assist local leaders in scheduling and meeting with legislators.
  • Consult with AFTPA Communications Director regarding AFTPA programs.
  • Research statutory and policy issues upon request of AFTPA staff representatives, local presidents, etc. Communicate research to those requesting it.
  • Develop and deliver other presentations as needed. (i.e. Bi-Annual Higher Education Conference, Executive Council Meetings)

Salary is commensurate with experience.
