Janitorial Organizing Coordinator

Based in Alameda, CA

SEIU United Service Workers West represents over 40,000 service workers across California. We have been on the cutting edge of progressive activism, building the power of low-wage workers in service industries and in leading the fight for social justice on issues such as health care, housing, immigration and education reform.

The Property Services Division of SEIU is home to the Justice for Janitors, Airports Workers United and Stand for Security campaigns, national campaigns to organize thousands of workers. United Service Workers West (USWW) represents 45,000 janitors, security officers, airport workers and other service workers across California.

SEIU USWW has a Coordinator position available immediately, based in Alameda, CA.


  • Lead strategic campaign planning incorporating all aspects of a campaign, including organizing, research, communications, community and political engagement
  • Lead delegations and speak on key worker issues with different stake holders in industry
  • Direct and develop and evaluate staff, including developing individual work plans. etc.
  • Work cooperatively with communications, research, representational and internal organizing staff, and allies in overseeing the execution of campaigns
  • Drive programmatic staff development across multiple campaigns and locations
  • Formulate and administer organizing plans and campaign budgets including strategic planning, budget development and office administration.
  • Integrates organizing plans with all other priorities both internal and union wide.
  • Works cooperatively in collaboration with other organization and SEIU International Union staff.
  • Be able to mentor staff and available to join them in the field as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the department.


  • At least three (3) years of supervisory experience and five (5) years of related work experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of labor program planning and development.
  • Knowledge of strategies and techniques used by SEIU to organize and lead division workers.
  • Knowledge of unions and their issues and how to organize workers around issues.
  • Knowledge of bargaining, organizing and organizational management
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to make formal presentations in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Bilingual English/ Spanish
  • Ability to handle multiple “priority” projects and meet established timelines.
  • Ability to work effectively with elected leaders and staff in complex and sometime political situations.
  • Ability to conduct training sessions in English and Spanish.
  • Commitment to social justice
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement work and manage time, as part of a team and individually
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours
  • Experience and knowledge of computer programs is a plus (including word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database software)
  • Driver’s license and reliable car
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
