COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Communications Director, Seattle WA –

Purpose: To direct, develop and implement the communication plan to support organizing, bargaining, member mobilization, and political action programs, and direct and supervise a communicator in the Organizing Department and administrative staff, as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Framing messages and developing materials for effective communication with the news media, the general public, union members, and other working people and allies;
  • Developing, planning and leading communications strategies and calendars for organizing, legislative, contract, political, and other campaigns;
  • Conceive and direct media events based on natural and created news opportunities. Write news releases, background pieces, advisories, fact sheets and other news-related information as well as flyers and campaign materials; write and place op-ed’s and letters to the editor;
  • Cultivate & maintain relationships with regional reporters and bloggers;
  • Develop talking points and member training materials for large scale organizing and bargaining campaigns;
  • Lead the union’s web and print communication program;
  • Provide communication support to electoral and other campaigns of the local and international union. 
  • Specific assignment may include developing email and web based campaigns; developing and supervising video and other multi-media;
  • Provide leadership and direction for communications for contract and organizing campaigns;
  • Train staff in using communications in the organizing model, designing and using print materials effectively, effective use of web and email, including technical aspects;
  • Supervises vendors and contractors in printing, design, public relations, video and others.
Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in photography, Internet-based research, word processing, print layout, photo editing, presentation and email programs.
  • Keen interest in new media.
Reporting
  • Reports to the President; keeps her fully informed on issues affecting local programs
  • Works in coordination with department heads; jointly develops plan of work for communications and division staff.
Other Qualifications:
  • Thorough understanding of the organizing model
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated superior writing skills including experience writing op-eds, press releases, fact sheets and other media related materials
  • Keen interest in new media
  • Flexibility to travel extensively as required in performance of duties.

Compensation:
·         Competitive salary, car allowance, completely paid health coverage and pension. 401K also available.
