AFSCME Iowa Council 61 – Political Field Staff

Description:

This is a political field staff position with AFSCME Iowa Council 61 working directly under the supervision of the Political Director.
Prospective hires will be responsible for day-to-day member contact including but not limited to advocating for our PAC (AFSCME PEOPLE), issue education, legislator outreach, community involvement on behalf of AFSCME and various other activities and duties as assigned.

Duties:

  • Member education (state and national issues
  • AFSCME PEOPLE fundraising
  • Political networking and coalition building
  • Advocating on behalf of AFSCME endorsed candidates
  • Attending local meetings & Council activities
  • Creating an AFSCME presence at labor and community events
  • Recruiting and training new AFSCME activists from membership
  • Various other duties as they arise or are assigned
  • Extensive travel, mostly in state, will be required

Qualifications:

The proper candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills capable of speaking with members in 1-on-1 situations as well as giving presentations and speeches in front of large audiences. The applicant should be adept at written as well as verbal communication and be familiar with labor issues and current events affecting working men and women. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications is strongly desired. Above all else, the applicant should have a commitment to social and economic justice and the desire to work something other than a 9 to 5. Pay will be commensurate with experience and this will be a contract position.
