The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT)
represents a growing force of over 140,000 working men and women in the United States and Canada. Our members work in the finishing trades as painters, drywall finishers, wall coverers, glaziers, glass workers, floor covering installers, sign makers, display workers, convention and show decorators, and in many more exciting occupations. IUPAT members’ skills are in high demand at every construction project in North America.
The IUPAT membership extends beyond far beyond the workplace, however. Recognized as one of the most active unions in the labor movement, IUPAT members help shape their communities in many ways: through an abiding commitment to service, by fighting passionately for workers’ rights that benefit all working families, and through effective and aggressive political mobilization.
SUMMARY
The Lobbyist contacts and confers with members of legislature, private sector, non profit, and other holders of public office to persuade them to support the interest of IUPAT. Lobbyists also identify and consult with key stakeholders in the decision making process of national, regional and local government. The incumbent will work to maintain relationships with these individuals and to assist clients to promote and protect the interest of the union. Keeping abreast of political development and activity within IUPAT is critical for success in this position.
The incumbent will be responsible for planning and coordinating meetings between members and elected officials to discuss legislative issues and proposals and allow officials to respond to union membership concerns. The incumbent may attend and represent IUPAT at state, regional and national meetings. Including participation in trade/industry association meetings, political events and executive briefings as needed.
The candidate also works in collaboration with Associated Funds, and Executive Management to coordinate and accomplish the political goals and missions of IUPAT. The incumbent will also manage special projects as needed. Prepare reports and policy briefings which highlight the status of Lobbyist activity on behalf of IUPAT.
The incumbent will be responsible for contacting individuals and groups having similar interest in order to encourage them to contact legislators and present views. The incumbent performs complex and challenging administrative work. The incumbent works with minimal instruction or supervision and must be able to multitask and prioritize a wide variety of assignments. The incumbent will be a participant of Lobbyist team on behalf of IUPAT and will follow Government Affairs action plan as designated by AGP. Candidate must be well organized, professional and exercise the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Advanced written and communication skills required. Incumbent must be comfortable working with executive staff, and administrative staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of sate and federal legislative process
- Thorough knowledge of state and federal elected / appointed officials
- Manage and coordinate daily governmental affairs activities
- Demonstrate ability to build strong relations with a wide variety of decision makers
- Assist AGP with preparation for meetings, events, General Convention, etc…
- Compose government affairs correspondence / reports as needed
- Ability to meet deadlines and handle a variety of complex items at one time
- Maintain database of external government affairs contact list
- Ability to organize and analyze political data
- Arrange meetings and determine priority and actions as required
- Timely communication and replies on behalf of IUPAT to state and federal contacts
- Assure discreet handling of all business matters
- Prepare and manage government affairs itinerary
- Assist AGP and executive e staff as needed on specific project work
- Proofread and review department communications
- Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None
AUTHORITIES
Participates with AGP and Executive managers in IUPAT political and tactical planning. Makes suggestions and manages political action timelines.
QUALIFICATIONS
Personable and politically savvy with proven leadership and research skills. Excellent customer service, written, proof reading and oral communications skills. Ability to work at various levels. Professional appearance. Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, web browser, and email.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum requirement -High school education with 4 to 6 years of government affairs experience to BS degree with emphasis in political science, economics, history, or equivalent. Computer literacy required. Union / trade experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lifting of light boxes may be required in the course of organizing and planning work in the office.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Standard 35 to 40 hour week, however flexible and long hours as dictated by the needs of the business (hours will vary).
Note: IUPAT is currently located in Washington, DC; however the IUPAT office will relocate to Hanover, MD within 12 months. Incumbent’s ability to relocate from Washington, DC to Hanover, MD is a condition of employment.
