TEMPORARY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Position Summary:
The assistant director will work with AFT and affiliate staff, as well as elected union leadership, to promote the AFT and its priorities to the public and the media (print, electronic and broadcast). This position is a temporary 18-month appointment to cover staff on leave.

Position responsibilities:

  • Planning and carrying out proactive media efforts to promote AFT priorities.
  • Initiating and maintaining contact with print and broadcast reporters and editors.
  • Providing media support for AFT conferences and conventions.
  • Representing AFT to the media under the direction of the department director, communications director, and/or officers.
  • Writing press releases, letters to the editor, articles and other materials for AFT spokespeople.
  • Drafting speeches and other written presentations for AFT leaders.
  • Organizing press conferences and other media events.
  • Coordinating with AFT’s legislation department to monitor activities on Capitol Hill.
  • Providing media training and assistance to AFT affiliates as needed.

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in media relations is essential.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to respond quickly to developments of importance to the AFT.
  • Experience with blogger outreach as well as with blogging and social networking including Facebook and Twitter.
  • Candidates must be organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Initiative, reliability and the ability to work in a collegial atmosphere are a must.
  • Persistence in seeing complex projects through to completion.
  • Ability to work independently and to plan and carry out long-term media strategies.
  • Some travel is required.

Secondary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • A background in labor or politics and familiarity with preK-12 and higher education issues is desirable.
  • Familiarity with AFT issues and/or its affiliates is a plus.
