Organizing Director – UFCW Local 5

UFCW Local 5 represents more than 25,000 members in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas including workers in retail, food and meat processing, healthcare, professional services and agriculture. We are committed to building unionized density in our industries and have shifted significant resources to organizing. We are looking for an experienced and creative Organizing Director to lead our existing team.

The Organizing Director will work with the Local 5 Political Director, Communications Director and other staff to coordinate the Union’s ongoing organizing efforts and to develop and implement long-term industry campaigns. This is a senior-staff position that will report directly to the President.

Qualifications:

  • At least seven years of experience in union organizing campaigns including NLRB elections.
  • At least three years of experience and demonstrated success and ability in providing direction and leadership to an organizing staff with varied levels of experience.
  • Experience in developing and implementing a major campaign.
  • Ability to work with members and staff to develop an organizing culture within the union.
  • Experience in dealing with language, ethnic and gender diversity.
  • Experience in working with labor councils, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations and other affinity groups.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and work within a budget.
