Background

The Union of American Physicians and Dentists is a dynamic and progressive labor union representing over 3,000 physicians, dentists, and podiatrists working for the State of California and for twelve other public employee and private jurisdictions in California. In addition, the UAPD represents California private practice doctors in their dealings with government programs, HMOs and insurance companies.

The UAPD is affiliated with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. With more than 1.4 million members, AFSCME is the largest public employees' union in the AFL/CIO and is the fastest growing union in America.

Qualifications

• Experienced Business Representative/Organizer
• Strong writing and verbal skills, ability to manage workload and work independently
• Ability to work with professional union membership
• Experience representing workers employed by the State of California, CSU and counties is preferred and/or knowledge of Labor Relations issues with public sector employers
• Demonstrated success at contract negotiations, grievance processing and organizing new members
• Willingness and ability to travel, and to work non-traditional hours including nights and weekends
• Valid driver's license and automobile

Job Duties

• Under the supervision of the Executive Director, participate in representational and organizing activities
• Work collaboratively with the President and Staff promoting the activities and objectives of the union
• Contract negotiations
• Grievance handling and investigation up to arbitration
• Negotiate and Administer Collective Bargaining Agreements
• Mediation and dispute resolution
• Coordinate and maintain a shop stewards base, including training and support
• Attend and lead regular unit membership meetings
• Develop rank and file leadership
