DIRECTOR OF ADVOCACY


WHO WE ARE: 

SEIU Local 721 is a dynamic and fast growing organization recognized as one of the largest and strongest public employee unions in the nation. We have over 200 staff members covering 4 counties. Our more than 80,000 members provide public services in diverse fields, including health care, social services, special districts, private non-profits, libraries, courts, parks and recreation, public works and mental health in cities and counties throughout Southern California.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

The Director of Advocacy reports to the Director of Member Services and is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the Advocacy Division.  Leads and manages the work of the Advocates, Lead Advocates and Administrative staff by assigning, monitoring and evaluating the staff’s work in order to ensure that the Union is delivering the highest quality representation services to the members.  This position also requires the collaboration with other Departments within the union.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Assigns cases and maintains case files for the Advocacy Division.
  • Reviews the weekly work plans with staff.
  • Conducts Performance Evaluations of staff consistent with established standards and expectations.
  • Develop action plans for staff that will attain goals, while considering areas of strengths and areas of weakness.
  • Responds to inquiries from members, leaders and Union staff with respect to representation work.
  • Makes recommendations on staff hiring and disciplinary issues.
  • Develops strategies on representation issues in consultation with the General Counsel and Director of Member Services.
  • Provides regular reports on representation services to the Union leadership.
  • Makes recommendations on processing cases in consultation with the Advocates and General Counsel.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:                                                                                               

  • Minimum three (3) years management experience in a union or other organizing environment preferred
  • Proven ability to lead, inspire, motivate and communicate effectively with staff.
  • Capacity to handle complex case and administrative issues.
  • Excellent verbal, written and computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and management time efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail along with the ability to understand the broad implications of an issue.
  • Ability to understand the complex representation needs of a diverse membership.
  • Ability to work quickly and creatively under tight deadlines and exercises sound judgment
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to develop working relationships with the Union’s members, leadership, staff and the employers.
  • Ability to understand and articulate the Union’s vision and strategy for social and economic justice.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:                                                                                                  

  • Basic knowledge of worker’s rights
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities.
  • Willingness to travel and work in different locations for determined periods of time.
  • Valid driver's license, working automobile and valid auto insurance with minimum level of coverage required by the union.
