AREA COORDINATOR JUSTICE FOR JANITORS
United Service Workers West – Local 1877  

SEIU USWW is hiring an Area Coordinator in Los Angeles and in the Bay Area.  Our janitorial division in Los Angeles is home of the Justice for Janitors campaign, is made up of thousands of largely immigrant, militant union janitors who have won living wages, family healthcare, and respect through years of struggle. 

The Area Coordinator is responsible for the internal programmatic work of the union in the janitorial division in Los Angeles.  The coordinator is responsible for overseeing member leadership development, controlling the industry in their area, and for ensuring fair and adequate representation.  She/he is also responsible for protecting union work and smaller scale organizing campaigns. This is a supervisory position.  Applicants should have at least 3-5 years experience leading organizers.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate actively in and/or run campaign strategy meetings
  • Involve staff and members in strategy
  • Run campaigns strategically
  • Incorporation of following sectors into work: Politics, Client sector, Communications, Research, Legal, External, and Community and labor.
  • Development of a leadership infrastructure (Committees, Mobilization, E-Board, Training)
  • Maintaining key relationships with employers
  • Developing a system of accountability with staff (development plans, evaluations, constant one-on-ones, daily supervision of admin person in office)
  • Running a field campaign (Routes, Key sites, Big picture to field, Message, Actions, Fight backs and fight forwards)
  • Bargaining major contracts, (Proposals, Committee, Table, Develop staff in this area)
  • Manage staff
  • Make sure the relationship between staff and E-Board for area is working
  • Responsible for overall direction and implementation of union program and the growth and power of the union.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be bilingual English/Spanish
  • Applicants should have at least 3-5 years experience leading organizers.
