NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE/ORGANIZER — AFTRA


The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), is a national labor union representing over 70,000 professional performers, broadcasters, and recording artists working in the entertainment and news media. AFTRA's scope of representation covers broadcast and cable television (animation, award shows, children’s programming, commercials, documentaries, dramatic programs, game shows, infomercials, music videos, news, reality shows, daytime drama, sports, talk shows, variety shows, video news releases, voice over, and weather); radio (news/sports, commercials, and hosted programs); sound recordings; interactive games; “non-broadcast” material such as educational and training videos, and content created for Internet and wireless distribution.

The National Representative will be based in the AFTRA National Office Los Angeles location. His/her responsibilities include:

  • Implementation of AFTRA’s strategic organizing efforts in Los Angeles and other Western cities under the direction of the National Director of Organizing:  assists in training and guidance for deputies/stewards, elected leadership and organizing committees for internal organizing efforts.
  • Organizes, administers and enforces AFTRA contracts, with initial focus on television programming under the direction of the Assistant National Executive Director for Entertainment Programming.  
  • Maintain and enhance AFTRA’s internal relationships with AFTRA members, and external relationships with talent agents, employers and other labor organizations.
  • Will spend considerable time in the field in Los Angeles and other cities. 
  • May assist in contract negotiations and arbitrations.

Qualifications Required:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, graduate degree strongly preferred.  Must have experience with labor negotiations or organizing campaigns.  Must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills, and have to ability to multi-task.  Knowledge of entertainment, broadcasting and/or sound recording industries, as well as issues affecting creative artists and professional workers strongly preferred.  Fluency in Spanish preferred.  Position will be based primarily in Los Angeles, but will involve travel to production locations outside of California, including Canada and other non-US locations.  Valid driver’s license and passport required.

Salary:  $65,000 – 75,000, plus benefits, depending upon experience.  This is an exempt position.
