CLEAN Carwash Campaign/United Steelworkers

LEGAL ORGANIZER

The CLEAN Carwash Campaign is seeking a full-time Legal Organizer to coordinate legal activities for the carwash worker organizing campaign in Los Angeles, CA.

CLEAN stands for Community-Labor-Environmental Action Network, and is a diverse coalition of labor, immigrant rights, community, religious, and student organizations that supports the organizing efforts of carwash workers who are fighting for better wages, working conditions, and dignity and respect on the job.  Carwash workers have formed the Carwash Workers Organizing Committee of the United Steelworkers (CWOC-USW) to organize and win union recognition by carwash employers.

The legal organizer serves as the link between the campaign’s lawyers, carwash workers, and union organizers.  The successful candidate will interact with workers in a union organizing context, conduct interviews and other research on potential legal claims, and help attorneys assemble information needed to bring claims and cases.  Experience working with both lawyers and union organizers is preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serving as the primary contact person for attorneys working on cases for carwash workers.
  • Conducting interviews with workers and organizers to identify potential employment law and health and safety violations at worksites, and referring workers to appropriate legal counsel.
  • Communicating detailed information about violations to attorneys.
  • Relaying public information about cases to organizers.
  • Coordinating worker meetings with attorneys, including the possibility of serving as interpreter.
  • Using databases and charting to keep track of carwash worker cases, including hearings, court dates, and statutes of limitation deadlines.
  • Keeping the Steering and Legal Committees apprised of legal issues and status of various claims.
  • Communicating status reports and role of enforcement efforts in the campaign to workers and organizers.
  • Coordinating with government agencies investigating carwash violations.
  • Developing materials and trainings to educate workers and organizers about legal rights.
  • Attending union actions, including picket lines, press conferences, and rallies.

  • Detail-oriented, energetic, and highly motivated.
  • Ability to work independently with initiative and creativity.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Commitment to organizing low-wage immigrant workers.

  • Minimum two years experience working in the labor movement, preferably on organizing campaigns; some law school or paralegal experience a plus.
