Position: Institute for Teaching – Program Consultant
Location: 4100 Truxel Road, Natomas, CA 95834
Salary Range: $78,419 - $134,728 Per Year*

The IFT Program Consultant will be the key link between the schools, the IFT, and the wider school community. Candidates for this position will demonstrate strong leadership & organizing skills, have a deep understanding of public education & school reform, and a grounding in pedagogy & curriculum. Recent classroom experience since the enactment of NCLB and skill in working with students from diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds is preferred. Candidates for this position must also demonstrate an understanding and sensitivity to the need for teachers to have an authentic role in school reform, as well as the ability to earn the respect of teachers and others in the school community. This is a statewide position; therefore candidates should expect frequent travel as part of their assignment.
The IFT is a 501(c) 3, a tax exempt non-profit foundation, formed in 1967 by the Board of Directors of CTA. The IFT’s funding is from grants and the portion of the voluntary reverse dues check off designated for the CTA Foundation for Teaching and Learning. Unless the CTA State Council votes to reverse this or the funds are re-directed, stable funding is in place. Employees who work for the IFT are CTA employees and are considered to be “on loan” to the IFT– to do the work of the IFT. The IFT Program Consultant position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO and conditions of employment are determined by the CTA/CSO Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as an organizer and consultant to teachers and chapters interested in working on school reform issues
- Work with teachers and association leaders to promote strength-based initiatives in schools
- Work with teachers, administrators, parents and others in the school community to develop and implement IFT programs such as Appreciative Inquiry, Positive Deviance, Algebra Project and Early Childhood Education
- Represent the IFT and the specific school change projects at community meetings and events
- Represent the IFT at various CTA leadership meetings and events
- Encourage and assist teachers and chapters in applying for IFT mini grants
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the IFT manager
Qualifications:
- A BS/BA or higher degree
- Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing the public schools and public school employees in California
- Recent California classroom experience preferred (i.e., classroom teacher since enactment of NCLB)
- Demonstrated ability to organize people and build a strong, diverse school community
- Demonstrated diplomatic ability to build partnerships with other organizations and a strong network of community contacts representing the CTA Institute for Teaching in public settings
- Experience in developing and facilitating training programs
- Proven ability to work independently and be committed to school change
- Flexibility in work schedule, including willingness and ability to travel, work evenings and occasional weekends
- Demonstrated ability in written and oral communications
- Ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and learn programs necessary to support IFT organizing and communications
- Ability to obtain a valid California drivers license

*This position is in a bargaining unit represented by CSO. Salaries are established by a collective bargaining agreement. Step placement is also determined by the CTA/CSO Agreement.
