Racial Justice Staff Attorney

Position Location: Los Angeles or Oakland, CA, New York, NY or Washington, DC strongly preferred; other locations considered.

The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD, c3) and CPD Action (c4) are a national network of 43 community-based organizations in 30 states that build organizing power to transform the local, state and national policy landscape through deep, long-term partnerships with leading community organizing groups and progressive labor unions nationwide.

We seek an experienced and energetic attorney to support our racial justice campaign work with our network of partners. The staff attorney will work closely with our campaign staff and our network of partners to imagine, craft, and support campaigns to win progressive campaigns that further a racial justice agenda with a particular focus on state and local action. The staff attorney will work with affiliates on their existing priorities, and also support our network to craft a national agenda that we move collectively. Issues on which we have worked include just policing, ending mass incarceration, public education, economic justice and housing justice.

A strong candidate will have significant experience developing policy that draws from and responds to the priorities of local communities, and understands how to imagine policy change that supports community-based organizing and engagement. The ideal candidate will have deep alignment with CPD’s theory of change, which focuses on building strong people’s institutions, as a core priority for our social justice movement, and facility moving between institution-building spaces and “movement moments.”

Primary Responsibilities
The Staff Attorney will anchor work including:

  • Developing, in close collaboration with our partners, cutting-edge state and local policies that advance our shared racial justice agenda;
  • Building a racial justice program that intersects and furthers work in other issues area including economic justice, housing, public education, environmental justice, Wall Street accountability, etc.;
  • Representing CPD and the network in national coalitions and spaces;
  • Supporting program staff to raise resources for the work (e.g., support writing grant proposals or final grant reports);
  • Working effectively across CPD’s internal teams (research, campaigns, organizing & capacity building) as we move a racial justice agenda.

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;
  • At least 5 years’ experience providing policy support to racial justice campaigns;
  • Experience supporting community-based organizing and organizations preferred;
  • Strong connections to other key movement leaders in the racial justice space;
  • Experience working across departments or teams within an organization;
  • Success as independent, self-motivated, and strong leader that is able to drive project and programs to completion in fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work within a coalition of diverse organizations and partners;
  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Results-focused and organized.

Position ideally would be based in Los Angeles, Oakland, New York or Washington, DC. Exceptions may be made for exceptional candidates.
