We are currently seeking a Communications Director in Baltimore to develop effective campaign messages and communications tools -- leaflets, earned and paid media, brochures, newsletters, social media and web content -- in support of the union’s campaigns.


  • Develops media strategy, provides pro-active media outreach, and fields inquiries from the news media; helps prepare workers or allies for contact with the news media.
  • Develops and incorporates new media strategies and social media into communication campaign plans.
  • Writes and edits leaflets, newsletters, talking points, speeches, letters to the editor, op-eds, background pieces, fact sheets, press kit materials, and other materials as needed for various campaigns.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of strategic communications plans for organizing campaigns.
  • Works directly with workers and staff to get pictures, quotes and video clips.
  • Captures and edits photos and video for production materials.
  • Coordinates event logistics and interviews (i.e. videography, still photography, advisories, news releases, stage-setting collateral, etc.)
  • Monitors media coverage of various campaigns, maintains clipping files, makes recommendations on ways to improve media coverage.
  • Develops and Implements targeting and placement of paid advertisements to support various campaigns and political action.
  • Coordinates activity of all communications-related vendors including web, design, social and online media, to ensure effective, timely and accurate delivery of work in support of campaign initiatives and the overall mission of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as required to support the Council and its mission.

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in communications in a campaign environment.
  • Experienced in developing campaign message and enforce message discipline in fast-paced campaigns.
  • Proven experience in developing social and new media campaign strategies and programs.
  • Press and media relations skills with demonstrated ability to gain a broad audience for campaign messages.
  • Proven ability to execute leaflets, brochures, direct mail pieces, video scripts and other materials.
  • Knowledge of advanced graphic design software, video production and printing techniques.
  • Excellent oral written communication skills.
  • Ability to coordinate vendors and consultants involved in the Council’s activities and conferences.
