ROLE:
Under the direct supervision of the MAC Director and Deputy Director, Hearing Officers engage in representational work that includes, but is not limited to, representation of members in pre-disciplinary, disciplinary, and appeals hearings, and handling all other related duties, including written and verbal communication with members and employers, pre-arbitration work and grievance tracking.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and execute the steps of the grievance process.
- Attend pre-disciplinary hearings, investigatory meetings, and informal meetings, up to and possibly including pre-arbitration hearings.
- Take extensive notes and update the member’s record/profile for their case with relevant documentation.
- Be efficient in the use of the MAC phone system, including inbound and outbound calls and the documentation of all calls.
- Conduct in person and virtual meetings, hearings, and conference calls
- Prepare and execute pre-arbitrations and fully argue cases before a pre-arbitration panel.
- Train and develop stewards in all matters regarding grievance handling and representational issues.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a relevant field or equivalent experience in the labor movement
- Knowledge and understanding of collective bargaining and Human Resources issues.
- Demonstrated understanding of labor law, employment policies, practices, and procedures.
- Sound interpersonal and communication skills appropriate to providing a quality member experience.
- Skill in cultivating respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to manage and prioritize work, subject to dynamic deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to assess information and evidence and decide on an appropriate course of action.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including weekends.
- Have a valid driver’s license, working automobile, valid auto insurance and a cell phone.
- Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU Local 73.
- Patience and the ability to empathize with someone who is having trouble at work.
- An ability to remain calm and pleasant during tense phone interactions.
The salary for this job is $77,516 annually, and the position comes with substantial benefits, including a $7,800 annual combined car/phone allowance, paid holidays and vacations, fully paid health insurance benefits, and a defined benefit pension plan fully paid by the employer.
