The Department for Professional Employees, AFL-CIO (DPE) is seeking a Legislative Associate to support DPE’s federal policy and advocacy work on behalf of professional and technical workers.
DPE is a national coalition representing 25 unions whose members work in education, healthcare, media, the arts, science, engineering, and other sectors. The Legislative Associate is needed to support our work to advance policies that strengthen workers’ rights, protect professional integrity, and promote a more equitable economy.
We are seeking a proactive self-starter to join our small, collaborative, and dedicated team as a Legislative Associate. This role is perfect for an individual who is not only prepared to manage their core responsibilities but is also eager to contribute to the organization's other projects alongside committed colleagues.
Responsibilities
The Legislative Associate will support DPE’s legislative and policy work, including:
- Monitoring federal legislation, hearings, and regulatory activity relevant to DPE affiliates
- Maintaining legislative databases and tracking system
- Tracking congressional and administrative actions and preparing summaries, briefings, and background materials
- Assisting with policy research and drafting memos, talking points, testimony, social media strategy, and press releases
- Supporting coalition work with affiliate unions and allied organizations
- Representing DPE in advocacy settings including Congressional meetings, briefings, and fly-ins
- Providing general administrative and organizational support on legislative matters
- Travel to the Hill and some overnight travel may be required
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
- A strong interest in labor policy, workers’ rights, and progressive public policy
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in public policy, political science, labor studies, or a related field
- Prior experience with unions, Capitol Hill, advocacy organizations, or federal policy
- Experience utilizing social media and other communications tools to support legislative strategy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail and experience working with data, tracking tools, and spreadsheets
- Commitment to the mission and values of the labor movement
Salary and Benefits
- Salary range: $60,000 – $70,000 commensurate with experience
- Comprehensive benefits package including employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, a retirement/pension plan, 401(k), vacation and generous paid holiday schedule, and a hybrid work schedule with up to three days per week remote
