SUMMARY: The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) is seeking an Immigration Staff Attorney to further efforts to promote and defend the rights of immigrant workers while advancing LIUNA’s mission to achieve justice for all workers. The Immigration Staff Attorney will collaborate with other LIUNA staff to track developments in immigration law, advise leadership on developments in immigration law, and provide members with immigration legal support.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Coordinate with LIUNA’s Immigrant and Workers’ Rights Coordinator to meet the immigration needs of the membership including planning legal clinics, presentations, and developing other resources.
- Advise and counsel LIUNA leadership on immigration legal issues impacting the membership.
- Identify opportunities to participate in litigation challenging immigration enforcement, changes to immigration law or policy, and related constitutional issues.
- Participate in meetings and serve as a liaison to other unions, coalitions, and advocacy organizations on immigration legal matters.
- Conduct legal intakes for members with immigration issues.
- Refer members to appropriate immigration legal services, including the National Immigration Project and regional, state, or local resources.
- Prepare applications for immigration relief, work authorization, adjustment of status, and/or habeas corpus petitions as appropriate.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Juris Doctorate Degree; admitted to state bar and be in good standing.
- Strong oral communication skills, including public speaking.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently in fast-paced environments.
- Ability to navigate the interrelationships among the International, its Regional Offices, District Councils, Local Unions, and members.
- Willingness to travel (for occasional hearings, legal clinics, and conferences) and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
- At least 2 years of legal work experience, including at least 1 year of immigration legal work or other experience providing direct services to immigrants.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills.
