Union Representative

The Milwaukee Area Service & Hospitality Workers Union (MASH) represents roughly 1,200 cooks and cleaners, bartenders and baristas, servers and security guards, and more whose labor powers the hospitality industry. We are a growing union that organizes the unorganized while fighting for, winning and defending industry-leading contracts. We are a member-driven, democratic union.

MASH is seeking a Union Representative to drive union contract monitoring, enforcement and implementation in a large workplace, and to build an educated, activated membership around defending the contract and fighting for improvements. 

The Union Representative is employed in the bargaining unit as a rank-and-file union member. They are directed by the principal officer of the union. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor contract compliance by the employer, rooted in knowledge of its provisions and application and the experience of workers at the worksite. 
  • Enforce the contract, ranging from challenging employer non-compliance to investigating and pursuing grievances.
  • Assist in implementation of the contract both administratively as well through direct problem-solving in the workplace, including fashioning equitable solutions with management
  • Collaborate with union stewards and officers, other union staff and joint labor-management staff on external worker engagement, member recruitment and workforce development
  • Worker engagement and relationship-building, leadership development and committee-building, member mobilization and worker recruitment into active involvement in their union
  • Move workers to action and moving turf to build campaigns, through structure and organization that creates the power of strength in numbers
  • Lead workers in struggle, organizing workers to take collective action
  • Support other union-wide priorities and campaigns, e.g. living wage legislative campaign

Required Qualifications:

  • Commitment to trade union values, economic justice, and worker power.
  • Prior experience as a union steward or representative is preferable
  • Organized and disciplined; diligent and tenacious; fearless in the face of management and righteously indignant over offenses to workers and their union contract
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer literacy and ability to learn the organization's tools (e.g. Google suite).
  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and balance priorities and urgency.
  • Ability to be coached and trained, to be held accountable, and to struggle through difficulty.
  • Resourcefulness, persistence, loyalty and integrity and strong skills in analysis, planning, time-management and problem-solving are a must

Compensation:
Competitive pay and benefits according to collective bargaining agreement
