MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Training and Professional Learning is responsible for collaboratively planning, coordinating the delivery of, and evaluating high-quality training, leadership development, and professional learning programs for MTA leaders, members, and staff to advance the goals outlined in MTA’s Blueprint Strategic Priorities and the Board’s yearly priorities. The Director will a) manage staff responsible for program content and logistical support for all MTA training, conferences, and meetings, b) Coordinate and direct other professional employees participating in developing MTA training and professional learning programs; and c) Collaborate with MTA governance and members to produce programming that meets the needs and strategic goals of the MTA and its members. In line with the Blueprint Strategic Priorities, the Director will, in particular, provide leadership to grow TPL’s capacity to connect members to the life of the union, cultivate leadership at all levels of the union, and lead on social, racial, and economic justice.
With the overall goal of promoting organizing, empowering members, and developing association capacity in priority areas, the Manager will collaborate with MTA members and staff in the development of training and professional learning programs and assessment mechanisms. The role requires evaluation and continuous improvement of MTA’s training and popular education programs and regular analytical, quantitative and qualitative reporting to other staff, governance leaders, and stakeholders. It also calls for an ability to help a large and diverse organization develop and articulate priorities and intentionally pursue those priorities, adapting as circumstances require.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Curriculum Development and Planning – Member Training and Professional Learning
- Collaborate with stakeholders (members, leaders, committees, and staff) to develop learning objectives to achieve the goals of MTA’s Blueprint and training programs to meet those objectives.
- Design and implement an annual planning process for MTA’s statewide training and professional learning opportunities, including:
- Summer Conference
- Winter Union Skills Conference
- Education Support Professionals (ESP) conference
- Retiree Gatherings and Webinars
- Higher Education Conference
- Early Career Educator Conference
- Ethnically Marginalized Affairs Committee Conference
- LGBTQ+ Conference
- Labor Conference on Pensions
- Bargaining Summit
- Inspire Youth Conference
- Collaborate with other divisions to set goals for, design, and implement in-person, virtual or hybrid regional and local training to meet the needs of locals and rank and file members.
Curriculum Development and Planning – Staff Training and Professional Learning
- Collaborate with stakeholders (managers, HR, staff, and staff unions) to assess staff capacities and to develop learning objectives necessary to advance the goals of MTA’s Blueprint and a training program to achieve those objectives.
- Promote staff training programs and collaborate with managers and staff to help design, deliver, and promote staff learning opportunities.
Presenter Identification, Training, and Evaluation
- Develop a system to ensure high-quality training and professional learning including standards, a recruitment process, preparatory training on content and delivery techniques, and a rigorous evaluation for timely feedback for all persons providing training to MTA members and staff.
- Design a rigorous data-driven process to continually assess the strengths and weaknesses of MTA’s individual training programs and the program overall.
Program Development
- Investigate, identify, recommend, and apply for outside funding to supplement MTA resources for MTA training and professional development programs.
- Collaborate with the NEA and other national, state, and local organizations to provide joint training and professional learning programs.
- Investigate, recommend and implement the use of technology and social media to ensure that MTA utilizes new learning and delivery methods in its program of training and professional learning.
- Ensure all learning programs are inclusive, equitable, and accessible to diverse audiences.
- Stay current with trends and advances in training strategy, delivery, and assessment and popular education approaches.
Program Management
- Supervise, mentor, and support a multidisciplinary team of event planners and programmatic staff to ensure high-quality program delivery.
- Manage budgeted resources and staff of the MTA Division of Training and Professional Learning.
- Ensure that the expenses of MTA’s annual program of training and professional learning for members and staff are within budget.
- Monitor the program development and delivery process to assure that all training and professional learning opportunities are high-quality and that timelines and learning objectives are met.
- Regularly report to and collaborate with the Deputy Executive Director and Executive Director-Treasurer and other staff as appropriate to ensure timely delivery and achievement of learning objectives in furtherance of MTA’s Blueprint and Board priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred.
- Experience as a union member, representative, or organizer preferred.
- Experience as a Pre-K-12 educator or college/university educator preferred.
- Five to ten years of related experience, including project and staff management, event planning, program design, and implementation, union skills training, educator professional development, and/or staff professional development.
- Knowledge of adult learning theories, especially a popular education approach to adult learning.
- Knowledge of the community schools strategy.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of the role of leadership development in building a strong union.
- Demonstrated understanding of key concepts and commitment to dismantling systems of oppression that create inequity by race, class, and gender.
- Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines, as well as delegating responsibility to successfully manage planning and implementation of logistics for many and varied training venues and conferences.
- Ability to design, implement educational programs and evaluate their effectiveness.
- Familiarity with local union functions such as contract enforcement, collective bargaining, communication systems, and strategic campaigns.
- Familiarity with the needs and challenges faced by Pre-K-12 public schools and higher education.
- Proven effectiveness in team leadership and ability to foster a working environment that is highly professional, open, constructive, and collaborative and provides high-quality work and results.
- Ability to foster collaboration across multiple and varied stakeholders.
- Understanding of and commitment to MTA’s mission and goals and a pro-labor, pro-public education agenda.
- Understanding of and commitment to a vision of a labor movement that advances social, racial, and economic justice and a common good agenda.
- Proficiency in current computer applications for office management, program analysis, and training; ability to develop command of emerging technologies and concepts related to training and organizational development.
- Willingness to work long hours, nights, and weekends when needed.
- Car and license required for travel throughout Massachusetts.
