Summary
The Staff Director for the Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board of Workers United will need to have a holistic oversight and supervision of the union’s field staff to support the vision of the Joint Board, ensure efficient workflow and effective resource management in close collaboration with the Joint Board’s Executive Committee. The person in this position will be instrumental in maintaining organizational momentum, consistently moving initiatives from idea to successful implementation, responsible for monitoring and refinement to ensure ongoing effectiveness of the Union’s mission. The Staff Director needs to have a proven track record of fighting for social justice, championing workers’ rights, and fostering workplaces that are humane and respect the inherent dignity of all people. The Staff Director is accountable for creatively driving, enhancing, and expanding the Union’s mission to best represent its members and advance the principles of equity, dignity, and respect in the workplace. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as principal advisor to the Executive Committee on matters of staff.
  • Works with the Executive Committee in overseeing and driving the union's daily operations, including staff management and program development.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of staff across departments, geography, and industry ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Ensure compliance with Chicago and Midwest Regional Joint Board, Workers United’s policies, contracts, and labor relations standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve HR and operational issues as well as develop creative solutions.
  • Creates and maintains systems and processes to streamline operations.

Requirements

  • Past experience in a labor union environment is a strong preference, including collective bargaining, contract enforcement, and contract administration.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience in a union or advocacy-based organization.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Experience in coordinating internal staff operations and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (written & verbal) is highly preferred, but not required. 
  • Experienced in attracting and motivating extraordinarily talented staff, along with the ability to coach and mentor.
  • Experienced with Microsoft 365 Suite and Google Workspace for reporting and analytics.
  • Excels at building relationships and networks; influences others to achieve outcomes.
  • Travel as necessary 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license; must pass a DMV and background check; and must own an automobile in good working condition
