Union Representative

UFCW Local 2013 is a union of 13,000 members working in manufacturing, warehousing, food and other service industries, and health care in the New York City metropolitan area. Our Brooklyn-based union represents a very diverse workforce that is the backbone of the city. We are committed to improving the lives of working people.
Major responsibilities include:
- Daily visitation of assigned jobs
- Day to day contract enforcement
- Handling the initial investigations of members' grievances through their final determination in an arbitration proceeding; and handling representation case hearings and unfair labor practice hearings.
- Articulating the union's vision, motivating, and challenging workers by recruiting and developing worker committees and worker leadership
- Assisting the local union in carrying out full membership service programs, including auditing of membership records, preparing contract proposals, reaching agreement on a contract, membership ratification, and resolving problems.
- Organizing large worker actions as directed, by IDing, testing, and mobilizing worker leaders.
- Planning and executing worker meetings and trainings.
- Assist in contract negotiations as needed
- Assist in organizing (both internal and external) as needed
Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of contract negotiation, enforcement, and basic labor laws
- Campaign experience as a union member, organizer, or representative
- Comfort working with a diverse set of people
- Commitment to fight for justice and worker rights
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
- Bilingual Spanish (and/or other languages) DESIRED/ plus
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced work environment, with multiple priorities and critical deadlines
- Meticulous record-keeping and note-taking
- Willingness to work long, irregular hours and travel within the Tri-State area as needed
- Valid, Active driver's license - A MUST
- Strong communication Skills
- Knowledge of relevant Labor Laws
- Ability and willingness to understand our organization and take directions from Leadership
