General Job Description
Works to grow union membership, promote member participation in PSE activities and support internal organizing campaigns. Assist and support Organizers in carrying out identified duties and goals of organizing campaigns, member experience projects, membership drives and other union activities/campaigns. Understand all aspects of organizing including; developing a campaign plan, managing territory, developing raps, identifying potential leaders, and running organizing team meetings. Promotes unionism and union membership in a positive and effective way.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Works with organizing team to develop strategies, including long and short-range plans for organizing new members and retain current union density, taking direction from Organizer or assigned Manager.
  2. Assists in implementing goals, objectives and operating procedures for assigned organizing and member engagement campaigns.
  3. Participates in house/site visits following organizing guidelines and implements charts and assessments that track support throughout a campaign. Maintain detailed campaign notebook and submit activity reports as requested.
  4. Promotes the organization’s COPE and member experience programs.
  5. Using a variety of resources and tools, will assist Organizers with research projects in support of a growth campaign.
  6. Able to balancing conflicting demands successfully providing services in a broad range of areas, and carrying out assigned and required tasks in a competent and professional manner in keeping with PSE’s overall goals and expectations.
  7. Attentive to potential bargaining unit or prospective member concerns and/or issues.
  8. Promotes and works toward the accomplishment of PSE’s mission within the parameters of the adopted values, policies and procedures.
  9. Maintains working relationships with local leaders in an assigned area.
  10. Consistently searches for new and better ways to provide service to PSE members.
  11. Requires extensive travel in the course of the job, often working long and irregular hours, weekends and holidays, and may be assigned to work away from home for extended periods of time, including possible out-of-state travel.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned and directed.

Requirements of Position

  1. A high school diploma is required. Possession of a bachelor’s degree in labor relations, business administration, public administration, or education preferred.
  2. Knowledge of the public education system, education issues, and the role classified K-12 and higher education employees serve in the education system.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of labor organizations, labor law and contemporary labor relations trends, issues and practices.
  4. Effective written and oral communication skills, especially the ability to listen effectively and be responsive.
  5. The ability to work well with people in a variety of settings and circumstances.
  6. The ability to produce high quality work.
  7. The ability to perform well under pressure, changing and unexpected conditions, and meet deadlines.
  8. Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and dispute resolution skills.
  9. Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation, and flexibility in pursuit of quality membership programs and services.
  10. High degree of integrity and commitment to personal and organizational ethics and values.
  11. Demonstrated computer literacy skills including the ability to use the internet for research purposes and the ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
  12. Willingness to participate in professional development training.
  13. Possession of valid Washington driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.
