Organizing Team Leader

32BJ SEIU is one of the largest and most dynamic labor unions on the East coast, with over 163,000 members in 11 states and Washington, DC.  We are the largest property service union in the country, representing security officers, residential building workers and porters, commercial office building cleaners and maintenance workers; school support workers, window cleaners, and food service workers.

32BJ SEIU is at the forefront of building the nation’s labor movement.  The Union is growing by organizing workers who are fighting for fair wages, affordable healthcare, and a voice in their future.  We are currently hiring organizers to build on the success of our Airport workers’ campaign.    

District 615 of 32BJ SEIU represents 18,000 members in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.  The district is seeking an Organizing Team Leader, who is based in the Boston Office and will work with staff and members to oversee and help drive campaigns.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing strategic input to the overall campaign and strategy; articulating a positive vision of the project;
  • Leading staff by example, setting high standards in work ethic and professional approach to the work;
  • Leading and providing support to teams of staff and members in the execution of their daily work;
  • Conducting individual and group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns;
  • Assisting in developing the organizing skills of staff and member organizers;
  • Building one-on-one relationships with workers, educating them about the Union; motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take action;
  • Identifying and developing member leaders to guide and lead their campaign;
  • Working to involve community allies in organizing campaigns;
  • Engaging workers in broader union efforts;
  • Additional travel may be required.

Previous organizing experience leading campaigns is a must.  A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required.

Additional Qualifications:

  • The ability to work some nights and weekends is required
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team;
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan;
  • Effective communications skills;
  • Basic writing and computer skills;
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Fluency in a second language is a plus;
  • A car and a valid driver’s license are required.

Compensation:
We offer a competitive salary based on experience.  Our benefits package includes retirement, an employer-paid health and dental plan for full-time employees and their qualified dependents, and a travel allowance.  This is a salaried position.
