Political and Legislative Organizer

Based in Seattle, WA

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 21 is seeking a Political and Legislative Organizer. The Political and Legislative Organizer position is a full-time position. We are a large Union with a robust political program and we are looking for applicants who are willing to engage in direct fieldwork.

Requirements include:

  • Work with the Political and Legislative Department to develop and implement our electoral and advocacy goals and campaigns.
  • Policy research, analysis, and advocacy assistance
  • Coordinating member engagement in the political and legislative process, including in-district lobbying and lobby days, electoral and advocacy campaign events, and member testimony.
  • Develop member leadership and participation in our political program through trainings, one-on-one member development, including further development of our Political Action Team, our Healthcare Advisory Board and our Executive Board.
  • Day to day work in field engaging with our members on our campaigns and assisting our staff in their membership development—expecting to spend at least 30% of your weekly work in the field.
  • Support ABC (International PAC) fundraising and our voter registration program.
  • Coordinating the union’s candidate interview and endorsement process, including tracking candidate endorsements and contributions, recruiting members to participate in our endorsement process, coordinating candidate forums.
  • Help coordinate and implement internal electoral program including organizing and running phone banks, worksite voter ID program, and coordinating with our communications department on other member outreach.
  • Identify and develop members for potential elected and appointed political or community positions.
  • Work on campaigns throughout the organization including organizing, bargaining and internal member mobilization.
  • Representing the union in specific political and advocacy coalitions and tables.
  • Working with member lists and managing worksite contacts and voter contacts including some data entry.


  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well with a team in sometimes stressful situations while maintaining a sense of humor, perspective, and always assuming the best in your coworkers.
  • Excitement to work with the our membership and engage them in their union
  • Commitment to the UFCW 21 mission of creating better lives for our members and their communities and building a movement for the 21st century.
  • Commitment and interest in our entire organization, not just the political work.
  • Strong speaking, writing, research and listening skills and willingness to discuss political issues with members.
  • Basic computer literacy required; knowledge of the VAN system and Excel is a plus. Willingness and ability to learn our internal data systems is required.
  • Ability to be flexible and manage multiple tasks and in an organized way, the ability to “think on your feet.”
  • Ability to be self-motivated and take initiative to try new things and experiment.
  • Willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Commitment to evaluating work through racial and gender equity lens and ability to mobilize women, people of color, and other marginalized groups.
  • Some travel within Washington State and occasionally outside of the State is required.

Some experience with unions, advocacy, and campaign field work is preferable.
