Communications Manager

Founded in 2000 by the home care workers of SEIU Local 2015, the California Long-Term Care Education Center (CLTCEC) is an independent non-profit training organization serving nursing home workers and In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) workers. Our mission is to provide educational opportunities to long-term care workers so they can build better lives and provide high quality care to the consumers they serve. As the largest provider of training for long-term care workers in California, CLTCEC trains approximately 2,000 workers each year, primarily women and people of color, in six different languages.

With the wave of the baby boomers in or approaching retirement age, 10,000 people across the U.S. turn 65 each day – and will continue to each day for the next 15 years, rapidly increasing the need for long-term care workers. As policymakers increasing look to address this crisis of care, we at CLTCEC have the opportunity to advance and shine a light on the critical role long-term care workers can play in improving quality of care for seniors and people with disabilities.

CLTCEC is a dynamic, growing organization in year two of a three-year strategic plan. This is a new position with the opportunity to shape our communications work, including content for our new website (now under construction by Dose) and to build our social media presence from the ground up.

Reports to: Director of Strategic Partnerships

Position Summary: The Communications Manager will participate in the development of and drive implementation of CLTCEC’s strategic communications plan, including messaging and media strategy. Our communications goals include raising visibility, strengthening outreach to a multi-lingual audience of long-term care workers, and demonstrating the value of a trained home care worker to key policy stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works in collaboration with Director of Strategic Partnerships to establish impactful communications strategy that articulates CLTCEC’s mission, initiatives, and programs and expands organizational visibility reaching a specific set of audiences including stakeholders, partners, and long term care workers.
  • Writes and designs presentations, media releases, flyers reports, newsletters, social media updates, and other collateral that will amplify CLTCEC’s work and advance fundraising and partnership prospects.
  • Develops, oversees, and refreshes content for CLTCEC’s new website (currently under construction) using WordPress, ensuring consistent and timely high-quality messaging that is informative, accurate, and fosters storytelling of long-term care workers and consumers.
  • Monitors trends and issues in the community, region, and national landscape; evaluating and refining CLTCEC’s communications plan and objectives based on trends and industry developments.
  • Manages all communications-related operations including coordination of the design, printing and distribution of communications materials that maximizes cost efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with news outlets, community leaders, government agencies, and other influential stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned by Director of Strategic Partnerships or designee

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Non-profit Management or related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience in communications with strong track record of executing successful strategic communications and creative marketing campaigns that utilize powerful storytelling techniques to build support and advance organization’s mission.
  • Experience using a content management system such as WordPress and tools including Google Analytics
  • Exceptional research, writing, and presentation skills with proven ability to create targeted, persuasive, and inspiring communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, experience with diverse audiences with the ability to exercise discretion in composing and delivering communications. Demonstrate compassion, competency, and professional accountability for interactions with consumers, stakeholders, colleagues, and others.
  • Ability to anticipate issues and use appropriate judgement to plan solutions and manage obstacles as they arise.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, proactive and results-oriented with the capability to work collaboratively handling multiple projects simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Exhibit collegiality and diplomacy within a team environment, display good work ethics and a mature understanding of cultural diversity.
  • Bilingual preferred (in Spanish/English, Chinese/English, Korean/English, or Armenian/English).
  • Familiarity with healthcare environment strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications and Adobe InDesign (or similar software; familiar with database programs.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Commitment to the goals and mission of CLTCEC.
