Outreach Coordinator
Clean Vehicles Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Cambridge, MA

The Position
Our transportation system – the way we move people and goods through a network of cars, trucks, buses, and rail – is old and outdated. And it’s the leading source of pollution in the Northeast. It’s time for an upgrade. Join our campaign in the New England and Mid-Atlantic region to build a modern, clean, accessible, and equitable transportation system that expands access and mobility, cuts climate and health pollution, and strengthens the economy with good jobs.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), a leading science-based advocacy organization, seeks a motivated and detail-oriented individual to help plan and implement campaign organizing activities with the Clean Vehicles Program. The Outreach Coordinator will develop and implement online and offline activist and expert engagement activities and build relationships with key partners and allies in ways that complement the work of analytic and policy staff.

  • Plan and implement state and regional campaign outreach activities that move us closer to our strategic goals and meet our objectives.
  • Recruit and mobilize experts and activists to take online and offline action in support of campaigns. Seek to expand and diversify expert network.
  • Working with the Communications team, help to implement online tactics including action alert emails, social media visibility, web content, and webinars.
  • Build strategic relationships with new and diverse partners, including public health, labor, industry, environmental justice communities, and racial or social justice organizations, particularly Latino/Hispanic, Black, and Indigenous audiences, as well as low-to-middle-income, disabled, elderly, and rural communities. Coordinate with existing partners to further campaign objectives.
  • Represent UCS at major events and conferences to promote UCS and the Clean Vehicles Program.
  • Turn complicated technical and policy expertise into a compelling narrative for the public and supporters.
  • Provide timely and accurate production assistance for selected publications. Help promote major UCS analytic and communications products.
  • Maintain strong content knowledge and stay up-to-date on rapidly changing issues. Conduct research on decisionmakers, industries, and other potential stakeholders to identify key points of leverage.
  • Track, evaluate, and report back on campaign activities to evaluate effectiveness and demonstrate UCS’s role in winning campaigns for our funders, donors, and supporters.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant and comparable experience in campaign organizing and policy advocacy. At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated success with strategic campaign planning, grassroots organizing, coalition building, and online and offline mobilization tools.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and legislative policy and political process. Knowledge of transportation and climate issues is a plus, or enthusiasm for in-depth content learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is expected.
  • Excellent persuasive writing and oral communication skills for a general audience with attention to accuracy. Ability to represent UCS’ work to both general public and expert audiences, and ability to interact professionally with individuals with a wide range of skills and responsibilities.
  • Significant self-motivation, strong personal time management, project management, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • The ability to work both independently and in teams in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines is required.
  • Requires strong web research and computer skills using Microsoft Office. Knowledge of online email management and database software a plus.
  • Applicants who are bi-lingual or conversationally fluent in Spanish are encouraged to apply
