Two week Full-Time Canvassers

Covering the Durham-Raleigh area, NC
(personal vehicle required)

Care Workers in Action is looking for motivated, organized, and dedicated individuals to build a strong voluntary organization and a strong voice for working families in North Carolina. Must have passion for social justice and movement building, excellent communications skills, ability to work long and irregular hours, and be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Canvassers will be assigned turf in the Durham-Raleigh area and will focus on recruiting Home Care workers and Child Care teachers to join the organization.

About Care Workers in Action
We are Care Workers in Action, a joint collaboration of NDWA (National Domestic Workers Alliance) and SEIU (Service Employees International Union). We are a new organization of North Carolina child care teachers and home care workers organizing to win higher wages, better working conditions, and respect on the job!

Job Summary and Responsibilities
The primary focus of the Canvasser will be to support and empower members to grow and strengthen the organization. Responsibilities and qualities include, but are not limited to:

  • Grow the organization through house visits, canvassing, and phone banks
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports
  • Recruit members to join the organization and sign up for membership
  • Willingness and ability to learn
  • Willingness to take direction
  • Honest, reliable, and flexible
  • Ability to keep up with the pace of the work
  • Mobilize members to participate in targeted activities
  • Identify and recruit leaders
  • Other duties as assigned

Candidates should be motivated self-starters with a commitment to building strong worker organizations. Candidate should have solid judgment in interacting and communicating with new workers.. Candidates must have willingness and ability to take direction and function well within a team structure, and the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in diverse communities. Candidates should demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills. Candidates should have experience with recruitment, member sign up, and mobilization. Candidates must be able to climb stairs, drive alone in a vehicle, and use a navigation system. It is preferred that candidates have basic computer skills and be able to complete daily debrief forms electronically. Candidates should have strong written and verbal communications skills. Ability to work irregular hours, including nights and long hours on the weekends. Candidates must maintain a valid state driver’s license.

Care Workers in Action is committed to providing leadership development opportunities and resources. It is recognized that the majority of a canvasser’s skill development happens through on-the-job experience.

Working Conditions

  • Long and irregular hours, including weekends and occasional holidays
  • Heavy walking and climbing when visiting home care providers
  • Travel within region
  • Individual driving while navigating a list of home visits
  • Personal vehicle required

Term of Employment: 2 weeks with paid training
