SEIU-UHW is a union of 95,000 healthcare workers and patients – and growing. We are leading and winning (yes, winning) the campaign for healthcare justice and economic justice for all Americans.

You are a tech-savvy organizer who has led campaigns, phone operations and field programs. Now you are ready to bring your considerable energy, discipline and creativity to maximize the potential of a 300-station statewide volunteer phone bank operation – not just for one election cycle, for the long term.

You will develop the union’s technological and human capacity to use the phone bank to contact and build relationships with hundreds of thousands of voters, healthcare workers and patients to win 2018 candidate races, ballot initiatives, political pressure, organizing and bargaining campaigns. Your work will contribute to the growth of our member leadership, our union, and the labor movement. It will transform the resistance into the revolution (no pressure).

The Healthcare Justice Phone and Digital Campaign Coordinator works closely with the political, data, technology and field teams but reports directly to the Healthcare Justice Campaign Director.

Essential Job Functions

Building Our Human Capacity
The foundation of SEIU-UHW’s strategy to win and grow is to develop a network of 10,000 member leaders – both healthcare workers and patients. An organizer above all else, the Healthcare Justice Coordinator will:

  • Create a powerful experience for every person who walks into the phone banks to keep them coming back
  • Cultivate meaningful leadership opportunities for members and staff
  • Train and coach members and staff to both lead successful local voter contact operations and to recruit, train, develop and retain volunteers from within and outside the union

Building Our Technological Capacity

  • Use our existing technology to run and win campaigns
  • Assess the current predictive dialer’s effectiveness and integration with other systems
  • Research, test, and assess new data targeting, management, and voter contact tools to
  • Build the most effective, efficient, useable, nimble and integrated voter contact program possible

Other Responsibilities

  • Manage the Phone Bank – Back End
    • Develop targets, scripts, survey questions
    • Work with IT, data and operations staff to support 15 phone bank locations
    • Manage dialer software
    • Track and report results
    • Track and resolve technological issues
  • Manage the Phone Bank – Work with Staff and Members
    • Develop scripts and training materials
    • Train and manage phone bank leads across 15 phone bank locations
    • Track and report production
    • Track and report volunteer turn-out
    • Solicit and provide productive feedback
  • Work with all levels of staff from Union Representatives to Directors to
    • Develop goals and execute plans for member participation in campaigns
    • Train and develop member leaders and activists
    • Integrate the Healthcare Justice Campaign into the work of the broader union and vice versa
  • Work with vendors and consultants to price, compare, assess, test and implement new technologies
  • Plan and manage multiple campaigns and projects simultaneously in a high-pressure environment requiring rapid adjustment to changing priorities and strategies
  • Represent SEIU-UHW interests among community and labor allies
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


  • The ideal candidate has a working knowledge of a variety of political and data tools such as:
    • Voter Databases like PDI, NPG VAN, Nation Builder or Voter Circle
    • Predictive Dialers or Virtual Dialers like Live Vox or Call Fire
    • CRM software like Salesforce
    • Texting programs like Hustle
    • Spreadsheets like Google Sheets or Excel
  • Experience with data analytics vendors such as Catalist, Civis Analytics, call vendors like Stones Phones and campaign resources such as the Analyst Institute and Net Roots is highly desirable;
  • Superior oral and written communication skills;
  • Minimum of five years legislative, political organizing, or campaign experience with a labor union, state or local agency or association, non-profit community organization or progressive elected official or candidate with increasing responsibility and leadership or management roles
  • Ability to travel and willing to work long hours and weekends as needed;
  • Emotional intelligence and outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate, lead, build strong working relationships and hold others accountable;
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to creating a positive work environment that encourages personal responsibility, initiative and innovation;
  • Self-motivated, great attitude and strong team player;
  • Strong sense of professionalism and integrity;
  • Proven ability to work with diverse group of people, from union members to union staff and leaders to elected officials to other community and issue stakeholders;
  • Thorough knowledge of MS Office programs;
  • Experience in speech writing, media, and other communication/public relations fields is desirable; and,
  • Fluency in in Spanish and English is extremely desirable


  • Required to have a valid Driver’s license, automobile insurance and a working automobile.

Physical Demands

  • Able to drive sit stand and walk for long periods of time. Ability to work long and irregular hours including nights and weekends.
