Editorial Assistant

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is seeking an Editorial Assistant at our DC Headquarters, located a stone’s throw from the U.S. Capitol Building. This position will be responsible for working with the staff to produce The Postal Record and other NALC publications and communications, and to maintain the NALC website.

Duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Primary responsibility for processing, lay out, copy-editing and proof-reading the middle section of The Postal Record, including all monthly submissions, i.e. officers’ columns, wage and annuity charts, lists of deceased members and life members, Election Notices, as well as mutual exchange ads. (Processing could include corresponding with or calling the sender, scanning, and tracking, typing and formatting the items, as well as correcting punctuation and spelling). This includes copyediting all pages of The Postal Record and NALC Bulletin before publication, then reviewing the proofs from the printer.
  • Handle artwork, including obtaining photos and inserting digital graphic files into layouts.
  • Primary responsibility for department’s photo files, including purchasing photos for magazine use, labeling and filing photos (including digital images), mailing out requested photos, and keeping track of borrowed photos.
  • Handling department’s general email account, and other correspondence, including opening and processing the department’s mail, responding to written and telephone inquiries and generating letters and memos.
  • Processing convention-related material for publication as well as Branch Publication Competition entries and awards.
  • Assist the Director of Media Relations with media contacts through telephone calls or emails.
  • Deliver copies of The Postal Record and NALC Bulletin throughout the NALC HQ offices.
  • Other duties that may be assigned.

These are the minimum qualifications required to successfully perform the job. These are the qualifications that are necessary for someone to be considered for the position:

  • A hands-on administrator with integrity, and a strong desire to work in a stable, union work environment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word (including Mail Merge), Excel, and PowerPoint, and willingness to learn new software as needed
  • Administrative skills, including keyboarding and writing / grammatical skills
  • Ability to type 30 wpm
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure
  • Detail-oriented and accurate
  • Good copy editing / proofing skills
  • Good alpha & numeric filing skills and letter formatting

Schedule: Regularly 35 hours per week: Monday – Friday, 9 am – 4:30 pm

EXAM REQUIRED: All final candidates will be assessed on-site through software testing to determine the technical qualifications of each final candidate.
