The Legal Department of Health Professionals & Allied Employees, AFT/AFL-CIO, has an opening for a Law Clerk for Summer 2018. HPAE is New Jersey’s largest and fastest-growing health care union; our 13,000 members are nurses, professionals, clinicians, and ancillary staff in hospitals, nursing homes, universities, home care, blood banks, and other health facilities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. HPAE is a progressive, democratic union whose goals are to advance the rights of healthcare workers through organizing, collective bargaining, member engagement, and community and political action.

The Law Clerk position, which may be full- or part-time, will entail research and writing on a variety of issues arising under federal and state labor and employment law. The Law Clerk will work closely with the Legal Department on labor arbitrations, and may have the opportunity to second-chair arbitration hearings. The Law Clerk will also work directly with union staff in various departments, including on active organizing campaigns; on picket lines; with local leaders; and with HPAE’s members. The position may include travel and/or work at HPAE’s offices throughout New Jersey and outside of Philadelphia.

Qualifications include a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and workers’ rights; excellent research and writing skills, with law journal experience preferred; and relevant undergraduate or law school coursework or the equivalent in experience.
