SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when ten local unions came together in Northern California to form one larger, more powerful union. Together our members are building a true 21st century union fighting to empower our members and improve our society. We are 54,000 strong - organizing and representing public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private non-profits, special districts, public health care, nursing and higher education. LOCATION: Northern California


  • Identifies and trains Union members to become stronger political leaders.
  • Assists the Political Director in engaging elected officials.
  • Recruits potential candidates for open seats.
  • Works with Union member leaders to build political committees responsible for organizing political field work in priority electoral contests.
  • Works with Union staff on identifying, training, and mobilizing member volunteers into priority campaign operations.
  • Staffs voter registration drives, phone bank operations, and precinct walks.
  • Acts as the primary day-to-day contact between the Union and endorsed candidates and their campaigns (where appropriate.)
  • Participates in ongoing community coalitions.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to relate successfully to individuals of all races, nationalities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, political affiliations, income levels, educational backgrounds, and occupational groups.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • A successful record of prior experience in developing and executing successful campaigns in one or more of the following areas: grassroots lobbying, electoral field work, community coalition building.
  • Demonstrated ability to work long hours, independently, under stress, with tight timelines, including nights and weekends.


  • Prior experience with community coalition building is required. Union organizing experience and a basic understanding of public services policy issues are preferred.


  • The current salary range is $64,169.64 -95,329.09 based on qualifications and experience.


  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$50,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.
