Full-Time Project Organizers

Based in Pittsburgh, PA

The Academic Workers Association of the United Steelworkers seeks energetic individuals with an interest in organizing academic workers in the Pittsburgh region.

Main Function: To educate and mobilize faculty, graduate students workers, and other academic workers, helping them to join together with their colleagues to improve their workplaces through collective action and collective bargaining.

The successful candidate(s) should:

  • be an attentive listener and a clear communicator with strong social skills
  • be detail-oriented, strategic, and creative
  • be able to solve problems and work independently
  • respond to challenges in a positive and constructive way
  • have the ability to adapt in a rapidly changing campaign atmosphere
  • be dedicated to the labor movement and to higher education
  • have a strong work ethic and willingness to work irregular hours
  • enjoy working as a member of an organizing team
  • take instruction and criticism with a positive attitude


  • Experience in union organizing.
  • Experience working in higher education or post-graduate degree (or progress towards post-graduate degree) desirable.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and social media.
  • Experience with NGP VAN and Basecamp 3 is a plus.
  • A driver’s license is required. Having your own vehicle is preferred.


  • Compensation commensurate with experience.
  • Qualified applicants will be expected to regularly work 40 hours a week, and to be flexible when asked to work extra hours or to work on weekends.
