AFT Washington is hiring an Operations Manager to oversee operations of the AFT Washington office. We are a union representing approximately 6,500 education employees in early learning, Pre-K – 12 and Post-Secondary education throughout the state of Washington. Job Description

Primary Duties

  • Supervises Administrative Support Team (AST).
  • Manages human resource needs of staff and the organization, including leave-tracking, fulfillment of legal requirements, maintenance of confidential personnel files, etc.
  • Facilitates performance review and work plan development of staff reporting directly to President.
  • Develops and promotes efficient and effective work flow among AST and between AST and other staff utilizing input from staff.
  • Schedules monthly and as-needed staff meetings.
  • Monitors budget and facilitates budget-setting process.
  • Oversees event planning and training schedule.
  • Manages AFT Washington participation in community partner events.


  • Provides meeting materials and background information for President in preparation of internal and external meetings.
  • Manages contracts with vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • 3 or more years of experience in office management.
  • Experience working in a union environment and commitment to the principles of unionism.
  • Ability to facilitate effective working relationships in an office setting.
  • Ability to assess systems functioning and develop and implement strategies to maximize system effectiveness.
  • Basic knowledge of Human Resources regulations.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of institutionalized oppression and ability to identify it and contribute to the organization’s efforts to undo it.
  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with budget setting processes.
  • Experience with event planning.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to manage projects from start to completion.

The first six (6) months of employment shall be probationary.
