Director of Organizing and Field Services

Based New York City, NY

Local 802 is the largest local union of professional musicians in the world with a jurisdiction covering New York City, Sullivan, Nassau, and Suffolk counties, NY and parts of southwestern Connecticut. We unite to fight for the common interests of all musicians by advancing industry standards that dignify our labor and honor and enrich our art. This mission is achieved through organizing and collective bargaining as well as through legislative and political action.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design external organizing efforts with an emphasis on developing and leveraging grassroots union member activism.
  • Plan and implement internal organizing and contract campaigns, seek out and develop rank-and-file leaders & committees.
  • Take an active role in contract negotiations.
  • Communicate with elected leadership and senior staff to ensure full participation and coordination in organizing initiatives and activities.
  • Contribute to strategic planning.
  • Oversee field services, schedule staff assignments and assess results.

Primary Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of union organizing.
  • Bachelor’s degree, 3-5 years of experience and demonstrated success in providing direction and leadership of union organizing campaigns.
  • Knowledge of and experience with collective bargaining, labor law, grievance procedures, contract administration, and organizational management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and at least two years supervisory experience.
  • Sophisticated verbal and written skills.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and social media.
  • Focused, with the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize and manage multiple assignments to completion.
  • Commitment to workers’ rights and social justice.
  • Familiarity with the performing arts is desirable but not required.
