Political Director

Based in Detroit, MI


Purpose:
The Political Director will develop and lead our strategy to use the political and legislative processes to improve the lives of HCMI members and working people across the state. This position reports to the HCMI Trustees and Chief of Staff.

Core Duties:

  • Build and support strategic campaigns to win economic, racial, gender, immigrant and environmental justice at the federal, state and local levels and to hold elected officials accountable to those issues.
  • Build and help drive programs that engage HCMI members and support their leadership so their voices are heard.
  • Create and implement outcome-driven political and legislative program, delivering measurable results that further our union’s mission.
  • Build staff and member capacity through regular, responsive training and education.
  • Build and nurture transformative relationships with elected leaders, candidates, and social justice allies.

Education and Experience:
SEIU Healthcare Michigan recognizes post-secondary degrees often fail to communicate an applicant’s skills and competencies. With that understanding, interested parties are encouraged to apply if they have at least four (4) years of relevant experience and can demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities, with or without a college degree:

  • Proven commitment to the labor movement or other arm of the social justice movement.
  • Ability to drive collaboration between diverse stakeholders with competing interests.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a timely manner and keep track of numerous projects.
  • Knowledge of state and local policy, processes and budgetary strategy.
  • Experience developing and executing highly strategic plans. Experience recruiting, supervising and developing staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to proactively strategically analyze threats and opportunities that may have an impact on the lives of workers.

Other Requirements:

  • Work is generally performed in an office setting, but may require work in other settings conducive to performing completing assignments. Long and extended hours and extensive travel are sometimes required.
