Communications Specialist

Based in Detroit, MI


Summary:
The Communications Specialist will develop and implement Healthcare Michigan’s strategy to lift up the voices of healthcare workers in organizing, political and other campaigns. This position reports to the HCMI Chief of Staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement the union’s public and member communication outreach program, including development of a strategy and message.
  • Provide communications support for contract, organizing, and legislative campaigns (includes development of media plan & production of materials).
  • Write and edit press releases and other materials.
  • Build relationships with reporters and respond to media inquiries.
  • Plan press conferences and other events designed to communicate the union’s message to the general public and other targeted audience.
  • Train rank – and – file members as media effective spokespeople.
  • Handle any paid advertising.
  • Improve and maintain high standards for member communications, including newsletters, leaflets, web page, electronic communication, and direct mail.
  • Supervise consultants as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
SEIU Healthcare Michigan recognizes post-secondary degrees often fail to communicate an applicant’s skills and competencies. With that understanding, interested parties are encouraged to apply if they have at least four (4) years of relevant experience and can demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities, with or without a college degree:

  • Proven communications, campaign, and/or advocacy experience.
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Computer skills necessary; graphic design skills desirable.
  • Deep understanding of social media strategies and tactics that drive communications.
  • Proven ability to execute external and internal communications programs
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including weekends, and to travel as needed
  • Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy or social justice organization required.

Requirements:
Applicants must submit and possess a valid driver’s license, personal automobile and auto insurance for the conduct of union business.

Physical Requirements
Work is generally performed in an office setting, but may require work in other settings conducive to performing completing assignments. Long and extended hours and extensive travel are sometimes required.
