Job Summary
NYSUT seeks an experienced and highly talented campaign director to serve as Organizing Manager. The Organizing Manager directs the statewide member organizing program, coordinates support of ongoing internal organizing efforts and works to integrate an organizing approach to union building at all levels of the union. Assists and advises the Senior Advisor to the President in developing strategic organizing plans and campaigns in response to the changing external environment and emerging issues at the local, state and national level.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee seven organizers and hundreds of member organizers that report to them to achieve the objectives of the Member Organizing Institute (MOI) Program. The Member Organizing Institute program trains, develops and leads member organizers across the state to conduct organizing conversations. The objectives of the program are to identify, recruit and develop new leaders, identify local organizing issues, and recommit members to the union, as well as other initiatives.
  • Assists in the implementation of policies, programs and strategic plans to build the strength of the union – workplace structure, membership density and engagement and issue based organizing.
  • Coordinate objectives and campaigns with Regional Staff Directors (RSD) and other relevant staff and leaders.
  • Reports to the Senior Advisor to the President regularly on the progress of union strength goals, activities and programs, including organizing drives/blitzes, worksite issue developments, field numeric assessments of members and non-members, quantitative and qualitative leadership development, and other events or activities that are pertinent.
  • Participates in strategic planning with Local elected leaders, the Director of Field and Affiliate Services, Regional Staff Directors, Labor Relations Specialists and Regional Political Organizers.
  • Identifies staff, leaders, members and outside sources to assist in delivering Organizing training programs.
  • Contributes field organizing expertise during organizational strategic planning – develops organizing field plans that drive and integrate with the overall organizational plan and planning process at the local and state level.
  • Identifies opportunities to integrate local, state and/or national issue-campaigns and recommends organizational structure, budget and planning to the Senior Advisor to the President to carry out those campaigns that which meet the organizational priorities of member retention and union building.
  • Works to develop an organizing culture throughout the Union, including but not limited to encouraging worksite organizing campaigns.
  • Creates and presents reports and plans to the Senior Advisor to the President and President. Utilizes reports for planning, accountability, and member leadership development.
  • Directs, supervises and evaluates seven staff Organizers and hundreds of Member Organizers and reports new developments in staff and work activities to Senior Advisor to the President.
  • Trains, develops and holds organizing staff accountable in all aspects of their work.
  • Incorporates staff development and accountability into all aspects of planning, implementation, and development of organizing plans.
  • Positively works with field, political and other staff in order to facilitate organizing results in the field.
  • Provides and is open to receiving clear and constructive feedback from colleagues.
  • Works with the Polling and Data Manager to help utilize the VAN and member database, checking for consistency, clarity, and accountability, including but not limited to the tracking of leadership development.

Reporting Relationships

  • Accountable to the Senior Advisor the President

Qualifications

  • A strong and proven background in union organizing, with an emphasis on field organizing, including taking a leadership role and the management of other organizing staff.
  • Must be able to plan and manage multiple campaigns and projects with the ability to adjust to changing priorities and strategies
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years Union Organizing experience preferred
  • Ability to travel as needed. Long hours including weekends and evenings are required to meet the demands of the position.
  • Must possess solid verbal communication, writing and Social Media expertise
  • Knowledgeable of contemporary political, legislative and labor issues and current events.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with supervisor, co-workers, staff and local leaders.
