Organizer

The Council of NJ State College Locals – AFT is seeking an experienced organizer. The Council represents over 10,000 faculty, professional staff, librarians and adjunct faculty at New Jersey’s nine State Colleges and Universities. Our office is located in Union, NJ. Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist Council locals when assigned to recruit new members.
  • In-state travel to the Council’s eleven locals is required.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a membership engagement strategy.
  • One-on-one internal organizing, including mapping the workplace, having conversations with potential, new, and current members of locals.
  • Identifying, recruiting, and training potential local organizers.
  • Supporting locals’ organizing campaign planning process.
  • Maintaining close communication with local presidents regarding organizing tasks.
  • Assist with membership communications.
  • Research and write articles for Council’s newsletters when needed.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned to assist the Council in its agenda and mission.
  • Work under the general supervision of the Council President and the Executive Director.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Previous experience in union or community organizing is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Initiative, reliability and the ability to work in a collegial atmosphere.
  • Ability to work effectively with leaders and staff.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of essential computer skills (MS Office Suite and communications software).
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Candidate must be organized and detail oriented.
  • Strong interest in and commitment to unions and the labor movement.
  • Background in labor and/or politics is desirable.
  • A car and a valid driver’s license are required.
  • Willingness to sometimes work long and irregular hours, including some nights and some weekends.

Successful candidate is expected to start immediately.
