Assistant Statewide Field Director

Based in Sacramento, CA

SEIU Local 1000 is seeking an Assistant Statewide Field Director for Northern California. If you are an experienced organizer who has trained, directed and led organizers and supervisors, a committed advocate for working people, and someone who excels at both strategy and tactics, please apply. The ideal candidate will be experienced in supervising several teams of managers, be creative in mobilizing volunteers, and an expert at running worksite campaigns.

SEIU Local 1000 is a cutting-edge labor union that represents 95,000 state employees in nine bargaining units throughout the State of California. We negotiate and enforce a labor contract that ensures good working conditions, fair wages and secure health care and retirement benefits.

The position is ideally based in Sacramento and is responsible for areas in Northern California including our Bay Area team, our Northern team, and our Sacramento team. This position reports to the Statewide Field Director in Sacramento and may be asked to serve as the Field Director during vacations or out-of-state travel.


  • Supervises Field Coordinators, up to several dozen organizers, and offices in California.
  • Train, teach, develop and direct activities of Field Coordinators and organizers.
  • Plan and implement worksite and political campaigns.
  • Build networks and community campaigns aimed at promoting political power for our membership.
  • Coordinate large-scale actions involving rank-and-file leaders and stewards.
  • Create and maintain accountabilities using lists, charts and databases.
  • Coordinates activities with other Field offices throughout the state.


  • Experience leading or supervising staff, assignments, projects and timelines.
  • Experience directing organizing campaigns.
  • Experience with collective bargaining, representation and database management preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and service workers.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Overnight travel required.
  • Valid driver's license, automobile and insurance.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Long, irregular hours.
