New Orleans Charter Organizing Project

Based in New Orleans, LA

The New Orleans Charter School Organizing Project in partnership with the United Teachers of New Orleans and the American Federation of Teachers are working to unite teachers and staff at charter schools to win a voice for themselves and for the students they educate by organizing a union.

We are seeking a lead organizer to join our campaign to strengthen the voice of charter school educators and stand for quality schools in New Orleans.

Lead organizers are responsible for all aspects of a union organizing campaign including providing effective leadership to educators and organizers, building respectful relationships with workers, identifying and developing leadership, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and motivating organizing committee and activists, and staff as assigned.

A Lead Organizer is a highly skilled organizer with extensive organizing experience as demonstrated by their knowledge, skills and abilities from past organizing campaigns, including:

  • Demonstrated organizing ability including, but not limited to, the ability to lead and motivate workers and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, effectively lead others and achieve goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
  • A thorough understanding of education policy and issues
  • Knowledge of labor laws
  • Strong abilities to handle multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong research and data management skills
  • Strong commitment to the labor movement and social, economic and educational justice

Additional Qualifications for Applicants:

  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and travel as required
  • Be self-motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
  • Computer literacy including basic skills in Microsoft office, data base systems, and social media
  • A commitment to social justice and union building.
  • Valid driver’s license and insured car.

Summary Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mentoring staff and member leaders in all aspects of organizing
  • Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the campaign as directed by campaign supervisor.
  • Evaluating campaign status to the immediate supervisor and/or Project Director.
  • Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of organizing staff
  • Providing a high level of strategic input into the direction of the campaign.
  • Lead debriefing and coaching of organizing staff
  • Helping motivate and provide feedback to organizing staff and member leaders
  • Ability to write and conduct trainings for member leaders and organizing staff
  • Developing message and communications
  • Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Project Director

Though the Lead Organizer does direct the daily activities and development of the organizing staff, the position of Lead Organizer is not a supervisory position, and reports to their immediate supervisor.

This job requires long and irregular hours, weekend work, and travel out of state.

Salary and Benefits:
Compensation is based on experience. Benefits include health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave as well as auto, travel and expense reimbursements.
