The Position
Do you believe that concerned, active people can make a difference in confronting some of the planet’s biggest challenges? If so, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), a leading national science-based advocacy organization, seeks a creative and experienced grassroots organizer/campaigner to develop and manage a Midwest-focused outreach, communications and public education effort to reduce the real and urgent threat posed by nuclear weapons and to prevent a catastrophic nuclear war.

Under the direction of the Manager, Strategic Campaigns for the Global Security Program (GSP), the Field Coordinator will help conceive and manage a multi-state regional outreach, communications and organizing effort with the goal of engaging key members of Congress, key constituency groups, UCS supporters, opinion leaders and local, state and regional media on nuclear weapons and missile defense issues.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a theory of change/influence strategy for targeted members of Congress in IL, MI, OH, MN, IN and WI involving a range of online and offline activities
  • Initiate and build strong, mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders/influencers, including prospective coalition partners, local and state elected officials, and media
  • Identify and cultivate UCS activists, Science Network members and donors to engage with UCS
  • Organize and manage off-line and on-line events, such as campus/community talks by UCS experts; activist and UCS supporter trainings, webinars and workshops, and briefings
  • Represent GSP at state and regional meetings and events
  • Collaborate with staff to develop state and regional media strategies in support of GSP goals
  • Help promote major UCS analytic and communications products
  • Develop and maintain basic issue knowledge (you do not have to be a nuclear weapons expert!) and stay up-to-date on developments in Congress and on nuclear weapons matters
  • Regularly monitor the views, statements, votes and issue positions of targeted members of Congress
  • Track, evaluate, and report back on campaign activities to evaluate effectiveness

Qualifications and Experience

  • Position requires and 3 to 5 years of relevant and comparable experience in campaign organizing and policy advocacy
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Demonstrated success with strategic campaign planning, grassroots organizing, and online and offline mobilization tools
  • Global security/nuclear weapons issue experience is helpful but not required
  • Must have experience in building and maintaining relationships with key constituencies, with an emphasis on non-traditional constituencies such as racial/social justice and faith organizations
  • Position will involve frequent travel to target states in the Midwest
  • Extended periods at a computer terminal

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time, two-year temporary position based in UCS’s Chicago, IL office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $52,000.
