Director of Data and Information Systems

Communications Workers of America (CWA) is seeking a Director of Data and Information to manage the operation of CWA’s membership and dues information database. The Director of Data and Information Systems is a senior member of the CWA Secretary-Treasurer’s office and reports directly to the Secretary-Treasurer.

This is a new position, and the successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to define and implement data strategy at of one of America's most progressive labor unions.

The Director of Data and Information is responsible for:

  • Ensuring that CWA has the necessary systems, policies, procedures and staffing in place to ensure accurate and timely membership data and dues collection.
  • Supervising six staff, including programmers and IT support specialists
  • Identifying and implementing improvements to CWA's data collection and management processes and technology.
  • Integrating and analyzing membership and dues data from a variety of sources to support CWA's membership growth, retention and engagement goals.
  • Working with leadership and staff to establish best practices and standards for data collection, acquisition, preservation, analytics, hygiene and enhancement.
  • Researching and managing competitive bid processes for vendors.
  • Holding vendors accountable to development and implementation goals and ensuring that projects are on time and on budget.

To be successful in this job, you should have experience:

  • Managing data for a large member- or donor- based organization.
  • Supervising people.
  • Working with SQL-based databases and using reporting and data visualization tools like Crystal Reports, Tableau or Google Data Studio.
  • Communicating technical information to people who do not have much experience with technology.
  • Handling multiple responsibilities and working independently within the context of a plan.
  • In addition you should be comfortable with using the Microsoft Office suite and GSuite/Google Apps.
