Technical Editor/Writer

Based in Silver Spring, MD

The Transportation Learning Center (the Center), a non-profit organization, is seeking a technical editor/writer to work as an independent contractor on a part-time basis. The editor/writer will be responsible for ensuring consistency in style and presentation in training courses developed for a range of technical subjects including transit elevator-escalator, signals and rail car maintenance. The end result of the work will be a consistently high quality suite of instruction-ready courseware.

Understanding of the basic principles of instructional system design (e.g. Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction) and experience in working on curriculum materials to train skilled blue collar workers is a plus but not mandatory.

The Center, founded in 2001, is an organization dedicated to advancing public transit and other transportation sectors at the national level and within communities. To accomplish this mission, the Center builds partnerships between labor and management that improve organizational capacity and expand worker skills and career opportunities.


  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a technical editor/writer
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office and excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication
  • Attention to detail, especially in ensuring consistency in style and format, proof reading for proper use of grammar, diction and spelling
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects at the same time while meeting deadlines


  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial technology, technology education, engineering, engineering technology, construction, education, or other related degree
  • Industrial experience, apprenticeship training, advanced degree(s), teaching experience, training material development, instructional design, and/or publishing experience will be considered.
  • Portfolio of technical writing and editing projects
  • Demonstrated experience in electro-mechanical technical, transit, safety, and/or elevator/escalator maintenance training
  • Experience in writing or editing training materials in coordination with other instructional designers, editors and graphic designers
  • Experience with or exposure to Instructional Design
  • Experience working in a labor-management partnership environment
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in additional software programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and CAD
  • Ability to work in collaborative multi-cultural setting.
