Member Services Cashier

The Member Services Cashier provides support and service to 32BJ members regarding their dues payments and membership status. The Cashier will respond to requests and complaints as well as process dues payments. As a member-facing representative of the Union, the Cashier will relay information on the organization and its services to members. Communication between the Cashier and the members takes place in person, as well as over the phone and by email. The Member Services Cashier is a patient, positive and friendly person who enjoys working with people and exhibits excellent social skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • High quality, interactive, supportive customer service. The Cashier listens to the members’ requests/needs/concerns and works to find the appropriate solution, either by transferring members to the appropriate office, or assisting themselves.
  • Problem-solve and offer solutions: identify problems and interact with internal resources to diagnose the issue, respond to concerns and follow up with a satisfactory resolution in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide ongoing education and information to members in regards to union policies, services and events. Maintain and communicate accurate information.
  • Maintain and balance a cash drawer, with adherence to established cash handling and balancing procedures. Process payments via cash, check and credit cards, and issue receipts and refunds. Utilize the Union’s internal database for processing and information.
  • Run daily reconciliation reports as well as analytical reports.
  • Understand union membership and authorization card process, and work with employers to provide accurate member information.
  • Assist with other duties and projects as needed.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience in customer-facing service environment, and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to stay composed and work well under pressure.
  • Active listening skills, and the ability to identify problems and respond to requests/inquiries.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required – both verbal and written fluency.
    • Multi-lingual including Albanian, Polish or Chinese (in addition to English and Spanish) a definite plus.
  • Basic arithmetic and numerical skills, and familiarity working with numbers.
  • Ability to adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability handling confidential material and information in a professional manner.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook. Ability to learn internal data and workflow systems required.
  • Familiarity with cash registers and credit card machines.
  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills, including effective troubleshooting.
  • Detail oriented and well organized.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multi-task.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to treat members with care, friendliness and compassion.
