Research Analyst

Based in Los Angeles, CA

Must be able to conduct a wide range of research for union campaigns and projects including but not limited to: internal and external organizing campaigns, contract bargaining, employment benefits, local and state public policy, community campaigns, basic trainings in research methods and analysis, and various programs.


  • Develop and drive thoughtful, strategic research and campaign strategies providing recommendations for the most effective policies or actions for the union
  • Identify key industry trends and innovative policy or regulatory strategies
  • Manage strategic research projects, including the ability to defend and present research findings to political targets
  • Monitor policy and legislative trends that may impact membership
  • Creativity in application of research methods to union campaigns
  • Data analysis and creation of reports appropriate for contract negotiations, media persuasion, staff, elected official, member education, and presentations before public boards and commissions on behalf of the members and the union
  • Lead research trainings for members and staff
  • Analyze the financial and compliance records of public and publicly-funded private agencies.
  • Work in collation with outside researchers and policy staff
  • Drive the program of SEIU International and Local 99 in all aspects of the work
  • Walk door-to-door, telephone or lobby voters and/or elected officials about candidates and issues consistent with Local 99’s electoral and legislative program
  • Participate in rallies and other activities supported or hosted by the Local
  • Submits Local 99 administrative reports such as Activity Reports, auto insurance, Helpdesk tickets, Outlook calendar scheduling, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Work under tight deadlines and in a team environment
  • Work with diverse staff within a labor organization

Knowledge of:

  • Legal and regulatory requirements for unions
  • A variety of research methods (interview, computer-based, etc.)
  • Public employee benefits including retirement, healthcare and wage standards
  • Basic financial concepts
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and a variety of computer-based research tools


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and/or prior research experience
  • Degrees in law, labor studies, public policy, economics or similar field of study are preferred
  • Bilingual verbal and written skills desirable


  • Strong commitment to progressive social change and activism
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License, current auto insurance, and reliable automobile
  • Work long and irregular hours when needed to meet campaign demands.
