Become a Union Organizer!

To gain real power on the job, working people need to form a union. Many companies exploit working people by denying them simple things such as breaks or drinking water. More and more, working people are standing up to these injustices and demanding a voice in decisions that affect their lives. From grocery store employees in Southern California, to teaching assistants and research assistants in Illinois, to auto workers in Mississippi and Alabama, working people are fighting for respect and dignity through organizing a union…and we are WINNING!

A union organizer assists working people in gaining union representation where they work. An organizer educates workers (mostly in non-union workplaces) about their rights, identifies and develops workplace leaders and runs union organizing campaigns for union recognition.

The AFL-CIO Organizing Institute (OI) runs an intense and highly selective, classroom and paid apprenticeship program to match talented individuals from a variety of backgrounds who want to be union organizers with unions looking to expand their organizing programs. The Organizing Institute offers participants a thorough look at a variety of unions to best match individuals with affiliate unions looking to expand their union organizing programs.

Upon successful completion of the OI Apprenticeship Program, graduates are recommended by the Organizing Institute to be hired by local and national unions. Annual starting salaries, depending on the hiring union, range from $40,000 to $52,000 with excellent benefits.

We are looking for participants who are ready to jump into a career as a union organizer. You must be energetic and committed to building a strong movement for working people in this country. We are looking for applicants who have passion, energy & are committed to help working people build power for themselves through forming a union at work.
