Our Families Can’t Wait! (OFCW) Organizer

Based in Hartford, CT

The New England Health Care Employees Union, S.E.I.U. District 1199 is now hiring a family organizer to help improve supports and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Connecticut. Our Families Can’t Wait! (OFCW) was founded in the summer of 2013 with support from S.E.I.U. District 1199. In 2014, OFCW held 12 lobby days and 3 public hearings and, working in coalition with allies, won $4 million to assist 100 families on the Priority 1 residential waiting list. During the 2017 legislative session, OFCW is fighting to prevent proposed DDS cuts and continuing to advocate for funding increases so that all people with I/DD can get the services they need.

The OFCW Organizer will work with families to continue building a statewide organization among families of people with I/DD to advocate for full funding of DDS services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Meeting one on one and in groups with families of people with I/DD to recruit new members, volunteers, activists, and leaders;
  • Organizing lobby days, family forums, and other events aimed at recruiting families and drawing attention to the need for DDS funding;
  • Working to bring together OFCW families with allies in the labor, provider, and disability advocacy communities.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership and organizing skills at work, on campus, or in the community. Experience with disability related issues and legislative advocacy is a plus.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Bilingual skills in Spanish, Creole/French, or Portuguese a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, manage time and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in coalition with a diverse range of organizations
  • Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Good listening, speaking and writing communication skills.
  • Automobile and valid driver's license.

Compensation: Dependent on experience; includes medical, pension, vacation benefits.
