Campaign Description:
LAANE is currently seeking a full-time organizer for our Repower LA campaign. RePower LA is an equity-jobs coalition of over 30 community organizations, environmentalists, and labor proposing solutions to put Angelenos to work in good green jobs and turn the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) into a greener, more modern utility. Since 2011, we have worked to pass programs and policies at LADWP to ensure that our utility’s investment in updating aging infrastructure and clean energy leads to the creation of good union jobs and ensuring that low-income communities of color benefit from programs that can reduce their energy use and save them money on their utility bills.

Position Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Campaign Director, the Organizer is responsible for leading efforts to build a ratepayer leadership development program, organizing and expanding an existing coalition of community-based organizations, environmentalists, and labor. The Organizer will coordinate activities with coalition partners and recruit coalition members; co-coordinate the strategy, content and logistics for public events and large-scale mobilizations; and connect organizing work with the research and communications staff on the Repower LA team. Reliable transportation is required.

  • Cultural competency and social justice values/work experience: A strong commitment to racial and economic justice and the labor movement; cultural humility, knowledge of utility, re-entry communities, and clean energy issues is a plus, fluency in Spanish is ideal.
  • Excellent organizing strategy and campaign planning skills: Experience (2-5+ years) doing community and/or labor organizing, experience working with diverse communities (especially African-American and/or Latino communities) and a multi-racial coalition, working well under deadline pressure, detail oriented, and methodical. Willingness to work longer hours and weekends when necessary.
  • Working as a leader within a team: Ability to work independently and collectively within a team, think proactively, possession of strong interpersonal communication skills and emotional intelligence.

Terms of employment: LAANE’s salary and benefit standards are very competitive, depending on experience. Full family health benefits; pension; generous time off; TAP card pass, and parking. Friendly, team-oriented working environment.

Application Process: This position is available immediately. E-mail cover letter and resume to Allison Mannos at amannos@laane.org. Please put “Repower LA Community Organizer” in the subject line of the email. No phone calls please. Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements will not receive a response.
